Information & Communication
SoftBank Group Corp. was founded by Masayoshi Son in 1981 as SOFTBANK. The company changed its name to SoftBank Group in 2015. While its restructured domestic telecommunications business was renamed to SoftBank Corp. (9434) and listed in December 2018, this company remains the core entity of the group led by Son. The company grew into a global conglomerate through numerous M&As, including investments in Yahoo (US) and launching Yahoo Japan in 1995, investing in Alibaba (BABA) in 2000, acquiring Vodafone's Japanese subsidiary in 2006, and making ARM (ARM) a subsidiary in 2016. In recent years, the company has focused on being an investment holding company, operating the SoftBank Vision Fund among others. Through these funds, it has been strengthening investments in companies driving the AI revolution, including OpenAI in the US.
