Tokyo Stocks Open Higher on U.S. Gains Despite Lingering Middle East Uncertainty
Tokyo stocks opened higher on the 7th, with the Nikkei 225 advancing 157 yen to start the session at 53,571, extending its recent winning streak.
Despite an inherently volatile environment fueled by Middle East tensions, buying momentum has prevailed in recent sessions. U.S. equities resumed trading following the Good Friday long weekend with solid gains across both the Dow and the Nasdaq, providing a positive lead and lifting sentiment in the Tokyo market.
However, the geopolitical landscape remains highly fluid. While there are lingering hopes for progress in U.S.-Iran ceasefire negotiations, President Trump's stark warning?threatening to target Iranian power plants and bridges unless the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened?continues to weigh on optimism. Moving forward, the market is expected to remain highly sensitive to macro drivers, particularly crude oil futures hovering above the $110 per barrel mark, as well as fluctuations in domestic long-term JGB yields.
