Tokyo stocks close down 120 yen as SoftBank Group decline weighs on market
Tokyo stocks fell on the 8th, with the Nikkei average reversing course after the previous day's sharp gains. SOFTBANK GROUP <9984> dragged down the overall market.
The Nikkei average closed at 62,713.65 yen, down 120.19 yen from the previous day. Trading volume on the Prime Market was 3,036 million shares. Trading value totaled 10,963,100 million yen. Advancers numbered 712, while decliners totaled 819, with 43 issues unchanged.
Uncertainty emerged over efforts to end the conflict between the United States and Iran, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 313 points the previous day, with the Nasdaq also declining. Tokyo stocks followed U.S. equities lower. With the Nikkei average having surged to a record high the previous day, profit-taking emerged in AI and semiconductor-related stocks. SOFTBANK GROUP in particular fell, weighing down the Nikkei average by more than 230 points on its own. TOYOTA MOTOR <7203>, which announced earnings in the afternoon session, also declined as investors reacted negatively to its forecast for lower profits this year. With the U.S. April employment report scheduled for release this evening and the weekend approaching, position adjustments also intensified. The Nikkei average fell nearly 700 yen at one point, but buying on dips remained strong, and the decline narrowed in the afternoon session. The special quotation (SQ) for May stock index options was reportedly 62,628.64 yen.
Among individual stocks, LASERTEC <6920> and DISCO <6146> were lower, while FURUKAWA ELECTRIC <5801>, SONY GROUP <6758>, and MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES <7011> were weak. RENESAS ELECTRONICS <6723> and SHIN-ETSU CHEMICAL <4063> declined. MITSUBISHI UFJ FINANCIAL GROUP <8306>, TOKIO MARINE HOLDINGS <8766>, and DAIKIN INDUSTRIES <6367> also fell.
On the other hand, KIOXIA HOLDINGS rose, while ADVANTEST <6857> and TOKYO ELECTRON <8035> were firm. SUMCO <3436>, JX ADVANCED METALS <5016>, and MITSUI KINZOKU <5706> gained. FANUC <6954>, MURATA MANUFACTURING <6981>, and YASKAWA ELECTRIC <6506> were bought.
