Tokyo stocks close up 1,384 points as AI and chip shares drive new record high
Tokyo stocks surged on April 16, with the Nikkei 225 benchmark surpassing its previous record of 58,850 yen set on Feb. 27 prior to the Iran conflict, marking a fresh all-time high for the first time in roughly six weeks.
The Nikkei 225 closed at 59,518.34 yen, up 1,384.10 yen from the previous session. Volume on the Prime market was approximately 2.337 billion shares, with turnover of about 8.666 trillion yen. A total of 902 issues advanced, while 608 declined and 66 ended unchanged.
The Tokyo market saw sustained expectations for progress in U.S.-Iran ceasefire negotiations, and following the previous day's gains in U.S. tech stocks, buying focused on AI and semiconductor-related shares. In late morning trade, news emerged that entrepreneur Elon Musk had reached out through associates to global semiconductor equipment manufacturers including Tokyo Electron Limited <8035>, regarding his "Terafab" semiconductor factory project. This prompted gains in Tokyo Electron and other major semiconductor equipment stocks, pushing the Nikkei to further highs. Although the index showed signs of stalling in the afternoon, it absorbed selling pressure at elevated levels and resumed its upward trajectory, supported by strong earnings from Taiwan's TSMC. Advancing issues accounted for nearly 60% of all Prime market stocks.
Individual gainers included Tokyo Electron, ADVANTEST CORPORATION <6857>, DISCO CORPORATION <6146>, Kioxia Holdings <285A>, Lasertec corporation <6920>, and SCREEN Holdings Co., Ltd. <7735>. SoftBank Group Corp. <9984> posted substantial gains. Fujikura Ltd. <5803> and Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. <5801> also moved higher. Nintendo Co., Ltd. <7974> and SONY GROUP CORPORATION <6758> performed well. TDK Corporation <6762> jumped sharply, while Murata Manufacturing Co.,Ltd. <6981> and TAIYO YUDEN CO., LTD. <6976> remained firm. DAIKIN INDUSTRIES, LTD. <6367> was heavily bought.
On the downside, KOMATSU LTD. <6301> and KUBOTA CORPORATION <6326> fell sharply. Kawasaki Heavy Industries,Ltd. <7012>, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. <7272>, TOHO CO., LTD. <9602>, BayCurrent, Inc. <6532>, ARCHION <543A>, and Shiseido Company, Limited <4911> declined.
