FX Summary: Dollar-yen trades around \158.60 ahead of Trump speech

The dollar-yen exchange rate in the Tokyo foreign exchange market stood at around \158.67 per dollar as of 10:00 a.m. on the 2nd, down slightly more than 10 sen from \158.77 at 5:00 p.m. the previous day, with the dollar weaker and the yen firmer.

In the New York foreign exchange market on the 1st, the dollar-yen pair closed at around \158.82 per dollar, up about 10 sen from the previous day, with the dollar stronger and the yen weaker. While the dollar was sold at times on speculation of an end to the Middle East conflict, it rose to \158.95 at one point following a series of favorable U.S. economic indicators.

In the Tokyo market on this day, selling of the dollar preceded as it had been bought as a safe-haven asset, and the pair touched \158.55 around 8:10 a.m. However, with U.S. President Trump scheduled to address the American people on the Iran situation at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the 1st (10:00 a.m. Japan Time on the 2nd), market participants were reluctant to make aggressive moves, and the dollar-yen rate has generally traded in the \158.60 range after the dollar selling subsided.

The euro stood at around $1.1595 per euro against the dollar, up about $0.0015 from 5:00 p.m. the previous day, with the euro firmer and the dollar weaker. Against the yen, the euro traded at around \183.96, up about 6 sen, with the euro firmer and the yen weaker.
