Tokyo Stocks Mixed at Open as Middle East Tensions Keep Market Unstable
Tokyo stocks were mixed on the 6th, with the Nikkei Stock Average rising 82 yen from the previous trading day to 53,205 yen at the opening, marking a consecutive gain.
European and U.S. stock markets were largely closed on Good Friday at the end of last week, but uncertainty over the Middle East situation shows no signs of improvement, keeping risk-averse sentiment strong. Soaring crude oil futures prices weigh on the market, while concerns persist over the impact of domestic long-term interest rate movements on equities. U.S. President Trump has warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by the night of the 7th or face destruction of critical infrastructure including power plants and bridges. With this deadline looming, the market is likely to remain sensitive to the latest news flow.
